Is your county high-radon?
Type your county or tap one below. Zones come from the EPA Map of Radon Zones. They are county averages, so every home should be tested, whatever the zone. See the full county table →

Source: U.S. EPA Map of Radon Zones (map 1993; data file June 2024). Zone 1 = predicted average indoor level above 4 pCi/L · Zone 2 = 2–4 pCi/L · Zone 3 = under 2 pCi/L.
Mold vs. radon: what's the difference?
Both affect the air you breathe at home, but they come from different places and need different fixes.
- What it is
- An invisible, odorless radioactive gas from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. EPA
- Signs
- None. You can't see or smell it, so a test is the only way to know.
- Health risk
- Long-term exposure raises lung-cancer risk; it is the leading cause among non-smokers. TN fact sheet
- When to act
- Fix at 4 pCi/L or higher; consider fixing at 2–4 pCi/L. EPA
- Typical fix
- A vent pipe and fan system that pulls gas from under the foundation and vents it outside. EPA
- What it is
- A fungus that grows where moisture lingers: leaks, damp crawl spaces, humid basements. EPA
- Signs
- Musty smell, visible spots, water stains or condensation.
- Health risk
- Can cause allergic reactions and irritation, and can trigger asthma in sensitive people. EPA
- When to act
- Under about 10 sq ft can be a DIY job; larger areas or heavy water damage call for a pro. EPA
- Typical fix
- Fix the moisture source, clean up the growth and keep indoor humidity below 60%. EPA

Three steps to a safer home
No jargon. Here's the order most homeowners follow.
Test
Radon: put a short-term test in the lowest lived-in level of your home (Tennessee residents can get a free kit). Mold: look and sniff for moisture, or book an inspection. Radon testing guide
Understand your result
Radon at 4 pCi/L or higher means fix it. Mold larger than about 10 sq ft, or growth after heavy water damage, calls for a pro. Mold guide
Fix & re-test
A qualified contractor installs a radon system or removes mold and its moisture source. Then you test again to confirm it worked.
My county is Zone 3. Do I still need to test?
Yes. EPA says all homes should be tested regardless of zone, and Tennessee's radon program has found action-level radon in every county. A zone describes a county average, not your house. (EPA, TDEC)
How do I get a free radon test kit in Tennessee?
The Tennessee Radon Program (TDEC) mails one free short-term kit per household, with lab analysis included. Order on the TDEC website or call 1-800-232-1139. (TDEC)
What radon level is dangerous?
EPA recommends fixing your home at 4 pCi/L or higher, and considering a fix between 2 and 4 pCi/L. (EPA)
Can I clean up mold myself?
EPA says a moldy area smaller than about 10 square feet (roughly 3 ft × 3 ft) can usually be handled by the homeowner. With heavy water damage or larger growth, get professional help. (EPA)
Will a radon system scare off buyers when I sell?
We found no official data on resale value either way. EPA's home buyer's and seller's guide recommends testing before you list, fixing high levels, and saving the test results and repair records, which it says "could be a positive selling point." (EPA)
